Blackside hawkfish | Similan Dive Center Marine Life Guide

The Blackside hawkfish is a small, striking reef dweller commonly found throughout the Andaman Sea. Its white body, accented by a bold black stripe, makes it easy to identify among vibrant corals. Known for perching on coral branches, it patiently waits to ambush tiny fish and crustaceans that venture too close.

Found between depths of 5 and 30 meters, it prefers healthy coral habitats around dive sites such as Richelieu Rock and the Similan Islands. Unlike most fish, the Blackside hawkfish lacks a swim bladder, so it rests instead of hovering, conserving energy while remaining alert. Divers appreciate this species for its calm temperament and bright colors. Because it rarely flees, it’s a perfect subject for underwater photography in the Andaman Sea.

The Blackside hawkfish can change sex, with dominant females becoming males if needed, ensuring group stability and reproduction. Although not endangered, it depends on coral reefs, which face threats from bleaching and pollution.

Protecting coral environments is crucial to preserve this fascinating fish and the diverse ecosystem it supports. The Blackside hawkfish beautifully represents the balance and resilience of life beneath the clear waters of the Andaman Sea.
